Offense
Technical Corner
Introduction
By Quim Colet
In this section we see some of the most important moves of the offense in water polo. It is divided into three subsections that correspond to different game situations: offense working for the center, offense to break the zone defense and a dynamic offense of 6 on 6.
Work for the center
1. Swim, reception and spin to protect the ball
Featuring Oscar Carrillo
General comment
By swimming, we try to get away from the defender and when we receive the ball, turn to the side that best suits us, with the intention of protecting the ball and preparing ourselves for the next action, like looking for to the center.
Tip by Quim Colet
When moving over the hips, it is essential to quickly move the legs and bring the knees as close to the abdomen as possible in order to start the eggbeater kick.
2. Slide backward to get away from the defender and protect the ball
Featuring Ethan
General comment
Slide backward to get away from the pressure of the defender, create a separation and be able to pass the ball to the center. It is very important to move over the hips and return to the vertical position right after the slide to be able to perform a successful pass.

When moving over the hips, it is essential to quickly move the legs and bring the knees as close to the abdomen as possible in order to start the eggbeater kick.
3. Receive ball, slide, spin and pass to center
Featuring Ethan
General comment
After receiving the ball, we have to get in horizontal position to perform a long slide and create the maximum separation with the defender, then turn to protect the ball and return to vertical position ready for the pass.
Tip by Quim Colet
When moving over the hips, it is essential to quickly move the legs and bring the knees as close to the abdomen as possible in order to start the eggbeater kick.
4. Fake and pass to center
Featuring Anni Espar
General comment
In this case we will try to deceive the defender by faking aggressive and provoking the defender to approach us, so we can generate more space for the pass to the center. We must be precise and look for the right moment to make the pass.
Tip by Quim Colet
It is important that we are aggressive with the fakes, in order to make the opponents believe that we could shoot at any time and tempting the defender to come towards us. If we accomplish this, we will create more space between the defender and the center and we will have more options to assist.
Breaking the zone
5. Lateral slide and over the hips to receive ball
Featuring Oscar Carrillo and Ethan
General comment
With this movement before receiving the ball we seek to occupy a space and then attack the ball to receive it in a vertical position (do not wait for the ball) and with a good elevation to be aggressive. This situation is also applicable during man up situations on the perimeter or posts.
Tip by Quim Colet
It is very important to face the hip to the ball and receive the ball in a vertical position. A good coordination with the passer is also key.
6. Varied fakes
Featuring Marina Cordobés and Oscar Carrillo
General comment
Here we have to keep a constant eggbeater and the knees high to maintain a good elevation. The objective is to make the goalkeeper fall by combining various types of fakes, but at the same time be able to make a good shot after the effort with the fakes.
Tip by Quim Colet
The frequency of the eggbeater is high and constant in the short and long fakes. As for the abdominal fake, we use a breaststroke kick and after we have to recover the position of the knees to be able to fake again or shoot.
7. Face the goalie and lateral pass (positions 2-4)
Featuring Cordobés-Carrillo; David-Pablo; Ethan-Mark
General comment
Here we seek to move the defense and the goalkeeper with a high and aggressive vertical position. Lunging high to pass is very important, so we must pay attention to the eggbeater, work with the arms for support and increase the frequency of the eggbeater for the pass.
Tip by Quim Colet
It is important that the pass is precise and tense so that the defenders and the goalkeeper have less time to follow the ball. Also, the player receiving the ball has to be ready to fake again or shot fast. A very common mistake is to focus a lot on the eggbeater when faking before the pass and forget about it right in the most important moment, that is, when we have to give the pass.
8. Slide and lateral pass (positions 2-4)
Featuring Wyatt-Ethan; Liam-David
General comment
With the lateral slides we seek to occupy a space looking for a passing lane, generate space for the center or perimeter players with the zone defense or look for a chance to shoot with no block.
Tip by Quim Colet
It is important to perform a fast and long slide and move quick over the hips to get back to the vertical position and perform the next action: assist, shoot or fake.
9. Vertical position slide w/ fake (4 directions)
Featuring Pablo and Mark
General comment
During vertical moves we have to maintain a straight position and a good frequency of eggbeater, especially when faking. The most important thing is to move and be aggressive, because if we lose height the next action, whether it is a pass or a shot, will not be executed with good technique.
Tip by Quim Colet
The position of the legs varies depending on where we are going:
- When going backward, the back leg is acting as a support to maintain verticality (00.09 and 00.30).
- When going to the right (for righties) we must shift our legs a little to the right almost as in the horizontal-lateral slide (00.19 and 00.49).
- When going to the front (00.03 and 00.25) and left (00.15 and 00.40) we have the support arm that helps a lot.
10. Horizontal slide, over the hips and fake (4 directions)
Featuring Pablo, Ethan and Mark
General comment
Our goal is to move quickly, with a horizontal body positioning and sliding with an arm kick while holding the ball. After this move it is essential to move over the hips and return to the vertical position.
Tip by Quim Colet
In this drill we have to work with the non-shooting hand and abs to move the legs quick to the vertical position after the slide. As we have already seen in other videos, it is not only necessary to have the body in a vertical position, but it is also very important to keep the knees up.
11. Slide, fake and pass (positions 2-3-4)
Featuring Anni Espar, Kelly and Marta
General comment
Here we can see the combination of different slides and passes to move the ball in an offensive situation, in the positions 2-3-4 of the perimeter. Speed and mobility will be key when occupying an area to generate spaces and new pass lanes that break the defense.
Tip by Quim Colet
We insist that it is very important to move over the hips after each slide to lunge and be able to make a better pass.
6 on 6 moves
12. Turning the defender and legs under the hips to receive the ball and shoot
Featuring Ethan, Ferran and Anton
General comment
In this 1 on 1 move our objective is to turn the defender. In this example, the attacking player first makes a move to distract the defender and then quickly changes to the opposite side. Once we get past the defender, we have to move over the hips quickly taking the legs to the front to separate more from the defender and, depending on how far we are from the cage, be able to shoot with the ball in front of the head and the legs in the front.
Tip by Quim Colet
With the new rules this action has become very useful. Once you get past the defender with the ball, it makes it very difficult for the defender to stop you, since if you are facing the goal, any touch would mean a five-meter call.
